The Saint John Women of the ELCA are active in many ways throughout the parish. Much of the behind-the-scenes work of the church happens thanks to this wonderful group. Among their many activities:
Circles - smaller groups of women - meet monthly for Bible Study and Fellowship. Each Circle chooses a service project to concentrate on during the year. The Altar Guild cares for the various communion vessels. prepares the altar for liturgies, and clean up following communion.
The flowers that adorn the altar during our liturgies are distributed by members of Saint John’s various circles to church members who are ill or homebound .
The Saint John Prayer Chain is a ministry of the Women, and over the years has changed from being a true “phone tree” to requests for prayer being sent out via the church E-mail address list.
The Comforters quilting group is sponsored by the Women, and the hundreds of blankets they make each year are shipped around the world to provide warmth - and even shelter - to people in need.
In the fall of each year, the Saint John Women hold a Harvest Festival for the congregation, consisting of delicious food and some sort of entertainment. The past few years, the Harvest Festival has taken place in Dittmer Hall, between the Sunday services. Money raised from the Harvest Festival offering is used by the Women to support their various outreach ministries, such as Glade Run Lutheran Services, Lutheran Service Society, and Lutheran Campus Ministry of Pittsburgh.
Each November, the women lead the worship services during their annual Thankoffering weekend.
And in the spring of each year, the Saint John Women hold a time of fun and fellowship for the congregation.
Every female member of Saint John is automatically a member of the Saint John Women of the ELCA. We pray that they will become active members of this outstanding organization.
